Do You Need an Underscarf? A Beginner's Guide

If you're new to wearing hijab, it's a common question: do you actually need an underscarf, or is it an extra step you can skip?

What an Underscarf Actually Does

An underscarf sits between your hair and your hijab. It does three things: keeps your hairline fully covered as you move throughout the day, gives the outer hijab something to grip so it slides less, and absorbs sweat so the outer fabric stays fresher for longer between washes.

When You Can Skip It

Thicker, textured fabrics like jersey hijab already have more natural grip, so an underscarf is less essential with those. If your hair is already secured in a low bun or braid and you're not worried about all-day coverage, you can often go without one for shorter outings.

When It Actually Helps

  • Full work or school days where you need coverage to hold from morning to evening
  • Smooth, slippery fabrics that shift without something to grip onto underneath
  • Hot weather, when sweat can loosen a hijab faster than usual
  • Active days where you're moving around a lot

A Simple Rule of Thumb

If you're reaching up to readjust your hijab more than once or twice a day, an underscarf is worth adding to your routine. It's a small, inexpensive fix for one of the most common everyday frustrations.
